Fall in Jackson, Michigan, brings a wide variety of opportunities for spending time outdoors. A used SUV can provide the space needed for passengers, as well as hauling and everyday comfort.

Think About the Amount of Passengers You'll Be Transporting

Consider the number of people you have to consistently transport in the vehicle. If you have a growing family, carpool often or have a large, active family, you may want to consider a three row SUV.

The Toyota Highlander is a family friendly choice that provides plenty of comfort and versatility, depending on the year and trim, while also offering a variety of seating options, including three rows. This SUV is great for fall festivals, school sporting events and other local attractions.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango are also great options if you'd like a three-row midsize SUV. If you don't need the space of a three row vehicle, a two row SUV can still seat plenty of people for weekend getaways or family vacations.

Try to Find Flexible Space for Cargo

The fall season often includes hauling in addition to seating. Pumpkin patches and football games may require additional seating, but you'll also need space to stow coolers, folding chairs, blankets and bags. Day trips to nearby state parks or nature centers can also require extra space for backpacks, sporting goods and extra layers.

The Nissan Rogue is a great option for commuting, errands and smaller family adventures. Its flexible seats can quickly open up the vehicle's interior. The Highlander, Explorer and Durango can accommodate different seating and hauling needs for a growing family. Always consider how much space you'll need in the bed or behind the rear seats when the vehicle is fully occupied. If you need to haul larger items in addition to seating passengers, consider how much space you have with the seats folded down and if the layout will meet your needs.

Think About What Kind of Surface You'll Be Driving On

Michigan's fall weather often includes rain, which can lead to slippery road conditions. If you plan to spend much of your time driving on gravel or other unpaved surfaces, an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle can provide extra stability.

All-wheel drive is available on some trims of the Highlander, Rogue and Explorer. The Jeep Wrangler is known for its off-road capabilities, and some trims of the Grand Cherokee L and Durango also offer four-wheel drive options.

Availability can vary depending on the vehicle's year, trim and other factors. If you plan to do most of your driving on paved surfaces near Jackson, a two-wheel drive may be a good value.

Focus on Comfort and Convenient Technology

A used SUV should also provide comfort and technology to enjoy on a day-to-day basis. Think about your commute, errands and other everyday activities in addition to any seasonal adventures.

Features like comfortable seating, temperature control, easy access to the second row, smartphone compatibility and other conveniences can greatly impact your experience. Some vehicles offer a variety of comfort and technology features, including touchscreens, heated seats, parking assist and other driver assistance technologies.

The Explorer and Durango can be great options if you're looking for a versatile family vehicle, and the Rogue can be a good fit if you want a more compact vehicle for commuting and light hauling.

The Wrangler can provide an alternative for those who want to pursue more adventurous fall activities, and some trims offer removable or retractable roofs for warm weather adventures. Consider what kind of experience you want when driving the vehicle on a daily basis in addition to any seasonal activities.

Weigh Your Options Based on Condition, History and Value

In addition to thinking about the size and seating capacity of a used SUV, it's also important to think about its overall value and condition.

You should also consider the mileage, maintenance records, previous ownership, tire condition and overall history of the vehicle.

In addition to the vehicle's overall condition, consider the cost. Fuel economy, insurance rates and maintenance costs can affect the value of a particular SUV. If you're considering a larger three row vehicle, think about whether the extra space is right for your needs. Always take a test drive to get a feel for the vehicle and its controls.

Make a list of must-have features for your next SUV, such as a third row, child seat installation options, roof rails or a power liftgate. Ask your children if they're comfortable in the vehicle and if they can easily enter and exit the vehicle. If you need to haul sports equipment or other large items, make sure they'll fit in the vehicle with the seats in whatever position you need them.

Ask about the vehicle's history report and available service records, and make sure all the technology features work as advertised. You may want to compare several used SUVs to find the right size and value before making an offer.
